Book 1 in The Life After trilogy from Carina UK.
After-life just got a lot more complicated
Maggie is a Soul Collector. It’s her job to transport souls from the Living Realm to the After – but during a mission to find a stolen soul, she ends up stuck in a teen mean girl’s body.
Trapped, Maggie’s soul is catapulted into Ally’s life – and the human world she hasn’t experienced for one hundred years. But, as a descendant of the most powerful beings in the After, Maggie must rescue Ally before the girl’s soul dies…
To survive, Maggie must uncover devastating secrets – because with one soul taken by a terrifying enemy, Maggie’s could be next!
When I first read the blurb of this book I was so intrigued. I mean a Soul Collector? I’d never ever heard of that before. Which is a big first, since I have read my fair share of books.
I found it a bit hard to get into the story at first. I felt like I was being thrown in the deep, and the whole concept of Soul Collectors seemed kind of vague to me. There is little word building, so I didn’t really understand the terms and all. It is safe to say that I started out pretty confused. However, when I got past those first chapters and everything became a bit clearer to me, I finished the book in no time.
Maggie, our main-character appears to be a bit cold at first, which is probably also why I wasn’t immediately drawn into the story. However when she gets sucked into Ally’s body that’s when she started growing on me as a character. Little by little you (and Maggie herself for that matter) get to know bits and pieces of her past, and at the same time she changes as a person and becomes less cold and I started feeling more of a connection with her. Great character development? Check!
The other characters were great as well. They where developed enough for them to be reliable characters.
The world sketched in this book, was partly what confused me in those very first chapters as well. Very little is explained about the actual After Life world, which is why I was so confused at first. However I found that I didn’t really need it -the explanations and all- because the story itself was so unique and most of the time the story takes place in the real world as we know it.
The plot was good! There were lots of twists and especially near the end the story was a bit dark. Which I honestly don’t mind at all! I like my books that way, especially the fantasy and supernatural genres.
All and all, this was a good and light read! Aside from the confusion in the beginning, and the lack of word building I would say this is a great and most importantly a fun read! I loved how unique the story was! Which makes it so much easier to say, lets just forget about my confusion in the beginning (which normally would spoil a book for me) and give it a solid four star rating![divider]

Book 2 in The Life After trilogy
This was such a strong sequel to the first book. Whatever I found lacking in the first book, you can find in the second book. All aspects I found lacking in the first book, where to find in Sould Possessed. Every unanswered question I found and answer to in the second book (although that one left me with enough questions as well!!).
Maggie, as a character, develops even more in Soul Possessed, she becomes the kind of character that I just love in books. She is strong, independent, has a big heart and genuinely cares and fights for her friends. She has these new powers that she doesn’t understand and that scare the daylight out of her. It doesn’t really help that most Guards are scared of her, and therefore ignore and avoid her. Where I had trouble connecting with Maggie in the beginning of the first book, I reconnected with her right away in the sequel.
Aside from Maggie, Cooper and Jackson’s characters really grew on me too. You get to know both of them better in Soul Possessed and it is hard not to like them.
Jackson is gorgeous and mysterious and obviously head over heels with Maggie. He has this darker side to him that I referred to in my review of Soul Taken. The chemistry between Jackson and Maggie is great and the romance between them was not too much all at once. Their romance is defined in a beautiful way and grows throughout their story (which makes what happens at the end even more horrible than it already is!).
Then there is Cooper, and really what’s not to like about that guy! He plays a smaller part, but you get to know him better throughout this books which made him one of my favourite characters. You’ll learn his personal story, how he died and became a guard. He is such an honest and lovable character. There is some chemistry between Cooper and Maggie, though they don’t really know it their selves, so I am secretly hoping that the subtle romance between them will grow into much more in the last instalment.
Soul Possessed is a great sequel! Interesting and good plot, lots of action, great characters and a great pacing. The world Katlyn Duncan created and that I grew to love in the first instalment became even more captivating. A great read, that once again ended with a cliff-hanger that had me perplexed. During the course of the story I thought I’d figured out how it was going to end, but Katlyn Duncan knows how to throw a reader off and when I did come to the end of the story it wasn’t what I expected at all! I can’t wait to read the third book, I just have to know how this is going to end![divider]
